Thank you for this reminder. It reminds me of Anthony de Mello, who said “all mystics – whether Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindus, Taoists, or Shamans – no matter what their theology, no matter what their religion, they are unanimous on one thing.
That all is well.
All the mystics tell us that even though everything is a mess, all is well.
It’s a strange paradox, to be sure, but it is nonetheless true.
Tragically, most people never get to see that all is well because they are asleep.
Thank you, Mark. I am fond of how Julian of Norwich put it: "all shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well." And she was alive during the Black Plague!
This common refrain among diverse mystics was both a consolation to me and a worry. It consoled me because it assured me that I wasn't just spinning my wheels by following a spiritual path. It worried me because I was wracked with fear, worry, anxiety and depression. What did they have that I did not?
What I love most about ACIM - and what keeps me in its orbit, more or less - is how practical it is. I was so grateful not merely for the ideas (which are not that unusual in the context de Mello correctly identifies) but that it included lessons by which the ideas could be brought into application (transforming the nightmare to a happy dream and then . . . )
So the workbook remains a kind of anchor - and a lantern - for me. As Helen Schucman observed, the course is meant to be lived!
Thank you Sean. I always enjoy your writing - and this one is full of helpful and lovely images and loving suggestions. Keep doing this! All the best you and yours
How grateful I am for you Sean who has waited with me while I screwed my eyes tight and insisted I was a victim! How happy I am to you Sean who has shared the way and assured me all was well, and who has been there with open arms when I took my first faltering steps in the Vision of Christ. We all do this together and I thank you for your courage, time and love in doing this for us all. x
I get a little giddy when I see that you’ve sent out a new essay, and I look forward to finding a brief quiet time in my day to read it. And, re-read it. And, re-read it again. Sean, thank you for sharing your clarity. :-)
